How Core Beliefs Cause Feelings of Rejection

Our core beliefs control every area of our lives. Even when we don’t consciously recognise their influence, they are still at work … silently penetrating our thoughts, feelings, and, inevitably, our actions. Identifying and changing our negative core beliefs will help us replace unhealthy, destructive actions with new behaviours that honour God and others. The Bible says, “Whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

Negative Core Belief: “I have to have the approval of others.” This leads to Negative Thoughts: “I’m not loved,” “I am not significant,” “I’m not accepted.” This leads to a Negative Feeling of “I feel rejected.” This causes Negative Actions like rejecting others, bitterness toward others and judging others. “Let us stop passing judgment on one another.” (Romans 14:13)

It is our responsibility to take charge and change the old progression (as above) into a new process:

New Core Belief: “I won’t always have the approval of everyone, but I have the approval of God.” This new core belief leads to New Thoughts: “I’m unconditionally loved by God,” “I am significant to God,” “I am unconditionally accepted by God.” This leads to a New Feeling “I feel accepted.” Because we feel like this our actions become New Actions: Accepting others for who they are, forgiving others, seeing good in others, and reaching out to others. “Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds.” (Hebrews 10:24)
